Photography Through The Microscope by David Linstead PhD
In order to photograph fish scales through a microscope, the SFCC recommend the use of a digital SLR camera body with a microscope adapter lens. Any microscope with a 23mm or 30mm photo tube can be used for this type of photography. Trinocular microscopes or projectina microscopes with a photo tube have been tested by the SFCC. In the above video tutorial we use a Canon 600D camera and it's associated EOS Utility sotfware. This enables a 'live view' mode whereby the microscope image can be viewed live on a computer screen. Once connected, the EOS utility software can be used to record live video or to take high resolution photographs using the camera. Most modern (~post 2010) Nikkon and Sony camera's also have this capability and it is assumed that other brands such as Fugi are also capable.
Microscope Lens Adapter
Ebay is one option for purchasing a microscope lens adapter. Most microscopes have a standard 23.2mm diameter photo/eye tube as in the training video. To find the latest products on sale please type "microscope adapter" or "microscope photo" into the general ebay search. Alternatively http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/imaging_apparatus could provide the correct lens. If you have any questions please contact the SFCC.
Photoshop Elements is recommended for post production of fish scale photographs and is available for ~£45.00 or can be downloaded as a 30day trial on the adobe website here.
