The Foundation area extends from the Cheviot Hills in the south to the Lammermuir, Moorfoot and Pentland Hills in the north. The main rivers include: the Tweed, Ettrick and Yarrow. The Tweed Foundation enjoys support and backing from Scottish Borders Enterprise, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, the Local Authorities, Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group, landowning and forestry interests and the many other statutory and voluntary organisations throughout the catchment who share our care for and commitment to the river. The Foundation believes that all this investment is in the long term interests of progressive land management and the conservation of the riverine corridor. However, it is also of great importance to the economy of the Scottish Borders. The Economic Impact Study undertaken in 1996 by Deloitte & Touche, funded by Scottish Borders Enterprise, found angling to be worth over 13 million a year to the local economy, supporting over 520 full-time equivalent jobs and accounting for over 10% of the value of all forms of tourism in the Borders. Objectives The First Five Year Management Plan ended in 1995 and a second edition has been drawn up and adopted. The Plan which summarises the objectives and current projects of the Foundation can be defined as "The co-ordination of data collection and analyses with fundamental research into relevant topics to devise management actions that will beneficially affect the future state of fish stocks." Gathering knowledge about past conditions of the catchment, waters, fish stocks and catches is an important part of the plan. Without some knowledge of past conditions, it is impossible to properly judge the present state of any part of the system and much more difficult to think about future trends and developments.
