Dee DSFB - More Information The Dee Catchment The Aberdeenshire Dee is an archetypal highland river: fast flowing, cold and dominated by the Cairngorm Mountains. For more than half of its length, the main land use within the catchment is deer forest and grouse moor, although there is a significant amount of commercial forestry in some areas. Agriculture becomes more important in the lower parts of the catchment, with the land around Aberdeen being quite fertile. There is little or no industrial development outwith Aberdeen. The underlying geology is predominantly granite, making the catchment nutrient poor outwith the fertile agricultural land close by Aberdeen. In two areas water acidity can reach serious levels, due to acid rain falling on to granitic catchments - Lochnagar was one of the early acid rain monitoring stations within Britain. The Board The Dee District Salmon Fishery Board is responsible for all aspects of salmon and sea trout management within the Dees catchment. A wide range of work programmes are undertaken, covering all phases of the salmons life cycle, including spawning censuses, juvenile surveys, habitat surveys, predator surveys and policing. Enhancement actions include bankside and instream habitat improvement works and a target-specific hatchery. The effectiveness of all enhancement operations are closely monitored to ensure that the measures taken are the right ones for the particular situation.
