Partnership Delivery of Prioritised Salmon Habitat Restoration in the Galloway River Catchments

(24 MONTH POST)

A two year Project Officer post is available from early 2019 to deliver an exciting new project titled ‘Partnership Delivery of Prioritised Salmon Habitat Restoration in the Galloway River Catchments’.

Galloway Fisheries Trust is a conservation charity working on fish populations, their habitats and water quality across the freshwaters of Galloway.  The candidate must be physically fit, motivated and hardworking.  A full valid driving licence is essential.  The position will be based in Newton Stewart and will work across the rivers in Galloway.

KEY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PROJECT OFFICER:

• Develop, with a further education body, a technique to effectively prioritise restoration work areas to give the maximum benefits for local salmon populations.
• Review and compile relevant data sets for local catchments to allow the prioritising of areas for habitat enhancements.
• Identify and meet with key stake holders / interested parties to identify potential partnerships to deliver improvements and how the Officer would assist.
• Develop close working relationship with key organisations to explore new opportunities to undertake enhancement works when they are delivering other work programmes around the identified ‘priority areas’.    
• Provide advice to interested parties regarding instream / riparian habitat restoration and protection, including legal requirements.
• Run volunteer training schemes in Galloway covering how to undertake simple habitat enhancement techniques.  These schemes would also work with local schools.
• Work to form effective working relationships with local communities.
• Encourage and deliver habitat enhancement works in priority areas.

The post holder is required to have a minimum of a degree, experience working in the wild fish sector, preferably hold a post-graduate qualification and be able to demonstrate the ability to analysis large data sets.  The post holder will need to show evidence of self-motivation and have a positive proactive attitude.

Salary will be £25,000 per annum.  Closing date for applications is 5pm 13^th December 2018.
