Open seminar
The marine life of Atlantic Salmon
Dr Jens Christian Holst, Norway
Marine Laboratory Lecture Theatre, Aberdeen Wednesday 11 May, 14.00-15.00
Results from the oceanic research on the Atlantic salmon at sea with an overview of some of the seagoing methods applied.
What can the ocean tell us about what to expect of salmon runs in the coming years?
Can we do anything at sea to improve oceanic conditions for salmon stocks?
Why moving into ecosystem based management of the oceans?
Why is Eastern Scotland of particular interest for studying marine survival of salmon?
Dr Jens Christian Holst ([email protected]) is a former scientist at the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen, Norway. He has performed extensive studies into the biology and ecology of the Atlantic salmon at sea and uses the salmon as an indicator of the conditions of the northeast Atlantic. He worked for many years mainly as a herring stock management scientist but switched around 2008 to ecosystem based management studies. Some of his work is controversial as he questions some of the main principles in today’s management of the major pelagic stocks such as herring, mackerel and blue whiting.
Dr Holst now works as an advisor for the commercial pelagic fishermen in Norway and is also involved in projects on closed farming and marine communication. He is interested in making new links with wild salmon interests in Scotland, including research projects, river trusts and universities interested in Atlantic salmon at sea.
